The year is 1579, and someone tries to kill Queen Elizabeth I. Jack, who is female, has left her criminal father, and has decided to try and do good. She dresses as a man and helps investigate with the Justice of the Peace and the coroner. Jack soon learns one of the Queen’s guards was shot while near the Queen, she sets out to investigate, and soon learns that people close to her have secrets that could be related to the case. She is in a hurry to figure this out before any other attempts can be made on the Queen. A good historical look at the time, with well-timed twists and turns. Jack is a great character, and hopefully, there will be more stories with her.
