Simon Latch is an attorney in a small Virginia town. He is married, soon to be divorced, and has three kids. He barely makes enough to survive on, likes to drink, and gamble on sports games, mostly losing. Then Eleanor Barnett, 85 and rich, walks into her office wanting a will made. She just had one done by a lawyer across the street, but didn’t like him, and Simon finds out the guy wrote some shady things in the will. He writes her a new one, but can’t guarantee that she’s as rich as she says she is. He fixes it so that he will make out well when she dies, but not like the other lawyer did. She starts to depend on her, having lunches and chats all the time, until she gets into a car accident and is in the hospital. He makes a power of attorney while she recovers, until she passes away by normal causes, or so we are led to believe. When her death is called into question, an autopsy shows she was poisoned, and Simon is arrested and charged with her murder. A trial takes place with a shocking verdict, and now Simon must fight for his life before it’s too late. This is another thrilling novel by author John Grisham. The story, and the characters, the trial are all top-notch, and this is as good as any of his other legal thrillers. Fans will love this one.
