Set during the times of the studios owning all their stars, signing them to contracts, dictating what roles they would take and how they would live their lives. Bartie Maddox lost his mother at 17, and took off for LA, got a job as a busboy, and somehow worked his way up to being the fixer for the biggest studio, led by the tough, take-no-crap, Solomon Myers, the most powerful man in Hollywood. In those days, scandals were the worst thing that could happen to a studio or a star. Bartie had a lot of messes to clean up. Someone got drunk and got in a car crash he helped pay off everyone involved. A star got pregnant, he would help her take care of it. If you were gay, you had to hide your lifestyle, have fake marriages, and stay in the closet, no matter what it takes. The story takes place over 50 years, and it’s a compelling story, a great look at the old Hollywood system, and it’s a lot of fun. It’s a novel you don’t want to put down. Author Kirshenbaum has written a great novel to end the year on.
