Erin Connolly lost her best friend Bonnie three years ago but still talks to her like she’s alive. She’s frustrated with her job and just quits. She decides to try and change her life and clears out a lot of her stuff, including books, which she puts in one of those pop-up library stands. Furthermore, she accidentally leaves a book that she didn’t mean to leave, and lucky for her, it turns up a week later, with an invitation to read another book. Turns out the person, James, someone from her past, liked the notes she left and wrote some of his own. This goes on for a while, the two of them exchanging notes, classic books and thoughts. Then Brian sees her one day and knows it’s Erin, he went to school with her and Bonnie, and they were good friends, until one day when he was being bullied, and told the kids about something going on with Erin’s mother and a teacher, and it ended their friendship. Now they seem to have fallen for each other, until Erin finds out it’s James who is the mysterious man and is furious. That’s until she learns the facts about things that happened over the years, and now she has to figure out if she can let go of the grief she has had since Bonnie died and move forward. This is a good debut novel, that incorporates the love of reading to help offset grief and pain. There’s more to these two main characters, and following them on the journey is engaging and fun.
