It’s the reconstruction-era time in the United States, and Lavinia, who is black, is in jail for murdering Simone, who is a vampire. When she tries to tell her jailers the truth about her and what happened they look at her funny. We read along as she tells the story of meeting her, being friends with her, and going on the run with her, and the bodies that are left in the wake, as Simone needs to feed every day. When they get to Indiana, Lavinia starts to make friends, and thinks her life could be different, until the bodies start to pile up, and the two women start to get looked at. Their relationship is getting strained now, and what can Lavinia do to escape this hell of a life she now finds herself in. A character-driven friendship now, with a white vampire and a black friend, makes for an interesting buddy road trip, especially when one is a vampire. The story told in Lavinia’s voice makes it that much more special. A fun, interesting debut novel from author Michaelle McGill-Vargas.
