Duluth, Minnesota, is the setting for the next novel in the series. Officer Maggie Bei is on her way home from a Halloween party when she hears shots fired and races into the house armed, looking for the shooter. When she sees a man running, she fires and kills him, thinking he was armed, and we learn he wasn’t. The murdered victims are a judge, Gordon Hartwick, and a school teacher. Police Lieutenant Jonathan Stride is on the case, along with his wife, who is also a cop. Turns out the man that was killed was a robber, three houses had been robbed, and things were found in his truck. As the investigation continues and a suspect is found dead, and it all points to him being the killer. Stride is not convinced and continues the investigation, which leads to a confession, finding a missing girl who has been gone for six years, and a shocking ending, which leads to the next novel. This is my first time reading one of these novels, and it is great. The characters, the story, and the shocking twists. I cannot wait for the next book.
