The story starts off in the year 812 when a cargo ship filled with valuables sinks and leaves one survivor who dies soon after. The year is 2028, and archaeologists are investigating an island in the Mediterranean and find valuable items, including an ancient scroll, and are soon trapped after volcanic activity takes place. Lucky for them, NUMA saw them, and Dirk Pitt was able to rescue them. Miles away a cargo ship is attacked and sunk, and Dirk is asked to go check it out. As the action heats up, Diek’s kids, Summer and Dirk jr. are on an adventure of their own involving drug smuggling. Back in Europe, Dirk is hot on the trail of men that have stolen the scroll and soon (not for the first time in this book) finds his life in danger. It leads to a climactic showdown on the ocean. This is another thrilling novel in the series with action-packed underwater adventures, car chases, and life-saving decisions being made. Fans of the series will enjoy this one.
