The year is 1989, and in Romania, Nicolae Ceausescu is in power and is a dictator. You have to watch what you say and do in the country. Lia, who is eight, takes money out of a cabinet to buy her mother a birthday present, and gets the family in trouble, the money is contraband. Comrade Blaga, a neighbor, knows about this, and in exchange for his silence, her mother must do things for him. Days later, he is found dead, and suspicion falls on the family. Lia also enters an art contest hoping to win a bike, but instead she wins the right to show Ceausescu around town when he comes; she would rather have the bike. There’s also a serial killer, and policeman Constantin is on the case and plays a part when Lia meets the leader. This is an intense look at life in 1989 through the eyes of a child and a police officer who both know there are better things in the world. It starts off strong and never lets up.
