Arnie Tenderton wants to be a published author but was turned down by Claudia Conley, a well-known literary agent. He feels he has written a great book and wants her to read it herself. He tracks her down at Christmas time to a place she is renting for the holidays in the Catskills. With him is Theo, a young boy who is 7. When he gets to her place, he crashes his car, and she takes them in and makes them dinner. Then things get weird, and he holds her hostage and makes her read the book. We soon learn there’s a lot more going on than just the book. To avoid any spoilers lets just say after the first half of the book, twist upon twist is revealed, just who is Arnie, and who is Claudia, and what has she done. You need a scorecard to keep track of everything. The first part of the novel is a little slow, but it sets up what’s to come in the second half. For people who like shocking reveals that you don’t see coming, this is the novel for you. Author Wrobel has written one of the best, twisty novels of the year.
