The second book in the series finds private investigator Annie Gore in her apartment/office when Katie May walks in. She wants her to look into the death of her estranged father, Ezra King, a snake-handling preacher in Mount Zion, Kentucky. The death is ruled by snakebite, but Katie doesn’t believe it. There was no autopsy, and he was buried right away. Annie soon bigs up her car, Honey, and heads for Mount Zion to look into. Everything at first seems on the up and up, but Annie gets bad vibes, someone cuts her brake lines, snf a lot of strange things are happening in town. Being here brings back memories of Annie’s childhood, not all good, and she needs to work fast because someone doesn’t like her poking her nose around. This is a good follow-up to The Witch’s Orchard, with a lot of character development for Annie and good supporting characters. The story is easy to read, with twists and turns you don’t see coming.
