Santa Catalina Island, off the coast of California, is the setting for the second book in the series. Detective Sergeant Stilwell is in charge of the substation, and he is on a stakeout at the airport, which goes wrong. One cop is killed and another seriously injured. He is determined to find out what happened on that night, even if he is not on the case. While on bench duty, he finds a backpack that leads back to a missing girl, Angela Metier, and when he follows up with Det. Renee Ballard (a character from other Connelly novels); he joins up with her in checking out new clues in her disappearance, and those of others. Stilwell has other small cases going on as well on the island, and when they figure out who might have killed Metier, it sets in motion a major undercover operation. After wrapping up that case, he finally figures out what happened that night at the airport, which leads to a major showdown. This is a great follow-up to the first novel in the series. Author Connelly is once again at the top of his game. Following along with Stilwell doing his job, dealing with the locals, the crimes, and branching out to work with the LAPD, and the climactic ending is thrilling and page-turning.
