Stutley Tillinghast lives by himself in a rundown house in Rhode Island that he owns, doesn’t have internet or a cellphone, just an old landline, and he kills people and buries them in his basement or in his lawn. He claims he is a priest, as he also owns a rundown church; he has a list of everyone he has killed and wants for the day he is dead. When he gets a call from the local hotel that a woman named Sarah Tillinghast is really sick and has been asking for him, he goes to get her. She has symptoms of the same thing that Stutley suffers from, and he keeps her in his house, trying to nurse her to good health. He decides it’s time to write his story, and we learn about the woman who made him what he is, and then left him. Stutley has to figure out what to do with the girl and himself. This is an eerie, creepy, gothic, intense novel. It’s one of those books you will not want to put down. A great debut novel from author Cavenagh.
