The year is 1968, in Oakland, and Natalia Fuentes is working in a bank, lives with Doris, and is enjoying her life as a lesbian. When she hears about Violeta, the daughter of the woman her mother used to work for, being paralyzed, and nobody can figure out what is wrong with her, she figures it’s a curse. Natalia grew up with a Grandmother that was a witch, and she gave up being a witch a long time ago. She gets a job as Violeta’s caregiver and goes right to work helping her. She is able to talk to her, move her out of her body, and figure out how to remove the curse. The two women fall for each other, and Natalia is determined to cure her of this curse no matter what; she finds she has strong magical powers. An intense gothic thriller, which at 159 pages, is a quick and easy read. Watching Natalia’s determination and the two women forming a strong bond is refreshing. A perfect summer beach read.
