The year is 1997, and for a young Nico Calloway, it’s a happy time; he gets to go with his mother and father into the forest in Penrose while she studys monarch butterflies. One night, he sees his mother climb a mysterious staircase and vanish forever. No one believes his story, and over the years, he wonders if it really happened. In 2023, he returns to town to care for his sick father, and strange things start to happen again in the forest, and he’s more determined than ever to figure out what is going on. The novel is written in three narratives; present day, his mother’s journals, and about a Gilded Age mansion that once was on the property. This is a suspenseful page-turning novel that you will not want to put down. It’s the debut novel from author Robinson, and he delivers on all levels. Fans of eerie thrillers will enjoy this one.
