The small New England town of Corvin’s Crossing is the setting for this novel. Mila is a magician who works at Mugsy’s Club doing magic shows. Her boyfriend, Brandon, is her manager and texts her to meet him in the alley. He has big news; he has gotten the owner of the new Luxe Hotel, which is being built in the area, to attend the show in hopes of her being hired to work there. While in the alley, we meet three black kittens who have been left by their mother. Mila finds them and decides to take them home. She names them Boop, Bippity, and Boppity. The cats can talk to each other, and we can hear their conversations. At the club during her performance, the body of Brandon is found, he was stabbed to death with Mila’s knife. She becomes the prime suspect in the case, and the kittens are by her side at all times and vow to protect her. When she is arrested, the kittens decide they will find the killer so they don’t lose Mila. This is the first novel in this new series, and it’s awesome. The story, the small-town feel, and the kittens are the stars of the novel. One of the best books of the year. I can’t wait for more adventures with Mila and the cats.
