The year is 2017, and Oliver Harris is the star player for the Camden Football Club and he goes down with an injury. It will keep out for a couple of months. The team brings in Leo Davies-Villanueva, a younger player who is on the rise, currently loaned out to a team in Spain. Oliver is asked to mentor Leo and get him ready to play with the team. Oliver is pissed about that, and the two don’t get along at first. They soon become friends, and Leo figures out why he has a problem with Leo; he has feelings for him. Oliver is secretly in the closet and wants to stay that way. Leo, who is also gay, is also attracted to Oliver, and they finally give in to their passion and fall in love. They decide to keep things secret for now, until they’re outed, and have to figure out where to go after it hits the news. This is the debut novel from author Emblidge, and it’s a good one. Using the football (soccer) as a background, the slow-building romance is one that engages the readers, and you root for the two to be together. Fans of gay sports romances will enjoy this one.
