The year is 2002, and Thornwalk House is in a state of disrepair. It used to be a thriving house, filled with the Gilbert family. Now it’s being sold and becoming a hotel. We are then told the story of the five siblings who lived in this house with their mother and aunt, who raised them. There’s Lydia, who is 15 in 1928, and in love with her tutor. There’s Annabel, who is 5, and is watching a fire blaze across a room in 1921. We also learn the stories of Hugo, Jeremy and Rosalind, who all left at some point looking for a better life. This story is about a family and their loves, losses and hopes for better lives. It’s an intense character-driven novel that starts off fast and never lets up. This is one interesting family to say the least. This is one you will not want to put down.
