Author Stephen Hunter goes back in time, to 1897, and tells the story of Jackson Swagger, in this terrific prequel story. Jack Swaggerm wo is up there in age, arrives in Arizona, and looks for work at the Callahan Ranch as a hired gun. Not believing he is any good, they put him through tests and find he is a great gun man. He’s offered a job and his first assignment is to protect a delivery coming from Mexico. What nobody knows is that Jack has his own reasons for being here, and it involves a man named Teacher, who died during a shoot-out. He soon finds out there’s a lot more going on in this area, and he takes it upon himself to stop all the bad going on and becomes a one-man wrecking crew. This is an awesome old-school western, complete with duels, shootouts, horses, drinking, fights and whore houses. Long-time fans of this series, like me, will be engrossed with this story and how it relates to the other Swagger novels that have been written.
