Easy Rawlins is a PI in Los Angeles in the early 70’s. Things have been slow for him until a man named Santangelo Burris asks for his help in finding his missing aunt, Lutisha James, who has a bundle of dirty money and pays for Easy’s services. Easy, who is well-connected in town with various people, good and bad, and various cops, tracks her to a house, where he finds dead people and a little girl hiding, and then he stumbles upon another murder scene, that of Santangelo. When he finally finds Lutisha, he’s in for the shock of his life. Meanwhile. Easy also finds out his son, Jesus, is in trouble with some drug dealers. So he has this case to solve and help his son out. It leads to shootouts, the cops and FBI raiding a warehouse, on Easy’s tip, and saving the people close to him. And if that is not enough, an old love shows up to reclaim Easy. This is a fun, well-written novel, the 17th in the series, and my first time reading one. Easy is a great character, he’s strong, streetwise and doesn’t take crap from anyone. It’s a great ride from start to finish.
