Boonie, Kevin, and Alex are siblings and grown adults with their own lives, and haven’t gotten together in years, when Bonnie gets a call from her dad that her mother has had a mini-stroke, and wants to have a Zoom meeting with the three kids. During the call, she wants them to come visit, and drive out together, and visit the Grand Canyon on the way. Thirty years ago, they were on their way there when something happened, and they never made it. The three have vivid memories of what might have happened, but never got the full story. They decide to drive Route 66 from Chicago, hit the Canyon, then get to California to visit their parents. The trip is anything but fun at first Kevin and Alex don’t get along, Kevin has a secret and old wounds, and weird things happen on the trip, and by the time they get to their parents house, everything has changed between the three. This is an intense character-driven novel that starts off fast and never lets up. Watching the three siblings being forced together and taking this wild road trip is a lot of fun. At its core, the story is about family and reconnecting. A perfect beach read.
