Mia Hayes, who is 17, comes home to find tension between her parents. Strange men show up demanding what her father took, who claims he has no idea what they’re talking about. A fight breaks out, her mother is killed, and her father takes off. Mia ends up staying with her neighbor, and on her birthday she’s at a protest in D.C., when she meets Logan, who is 18, and asks her out on a date. Before they can get together, MIa is kidnapped and asked about what her father took, she knows nothing about it. She is released and meets up with Logan at her old house and starts to put things together. Her father has left her clues, puzzles, codes and ciphers and now they are on a hunt to find out what he has hidden. She soon learns shocking secrets about her parents, and Logan and her life is in danger at every turn. When she finally solves the puzzle, it may be too late to avert an attempted assassination of a political candidate. This is the debut novel from author Jay Martel and it’s great. Following Mia and Logan on their journey, with some LOL moments, is engaging and fun. One of the best novels of the summer.
