In 1846, a woman named Providence Dare was on the run as an alleged murderer aboard the steamship Atlantic, being chased by a cop to arrest her. The ship sank near Winthrop Island she survived, changed her name, and later wrote about what happened. Today, Audrey Fisher is charged with watching over her famous actress mother, Meredith, who has had a bad drinking problem lately and who has lost most of her money. She has been picked to star in a new movie that has a lot of buzz, and can restart her career. They retreat to Winthrop Island to Meredith’s house for the summer. While there, Audrey reconnects with her father Mike, starts working with him, meets a new man, her husband left her and took all the money, and discovers a trunk in the cellar with paintings worth millions of dollars. As the summer goes along, new loves will be made, old loves will be rekindled, and someone’s live will be in danger. The story goes back and forth between the ship, the present and the past with Meredith and Mike. This is a great character-driven novel that engages you right from the beginning. Author Beatriz Williams has written another masterpiece.
