Gabriel Allon has been hired to restore a painting in Venice when he notices a dead woman in the waters of Venetian Lagoon, it gets him involved in trying to figure out who the woman was and what she was doing in Venice. He recreates her face and he knows he has seen it before. She had a meeting with a London reporter, who was later and the girl vanished. It turns out she was working on a painting for the Vatican and discovered it was a lost Leonardo da Vinci. It leads Gabriel to the Pope, who is a friend of his and the discovery that the painting was stolen from the underground archives. Now the race is on to recover it before it is sold and lost forever. It leads to a daring plan to recover the painting and then back to the Vatican where the Pope’s life is in danger and a stunning climax to the story. This is the 25th novel in the series and it’s another great one. The action is fast and furious and it’s a novel you do not want to put down.
