The year is 1900 in Havana and Eva Fuentes is a school teacher and she’s working on a novel. She gets offered the chance to go to Harvard for the summer on an exchange program. She meets a man, falls in love and has her heart shattered. In 1966 in Havana, life is tough because of Castro. For Pilar Castillo things are bad, her husband was arrested and is in jail. She has hidden books given to her by fleeing people and she’s trying to keep them hidden. Her neighbor gives her a copy of Eva’s book and asks her to return it to her. She is able to and has to flee Cuba before she is arrested. In 2024, in London, Margo Reynolds, who has a business finding lost treasures, is hired to find the copy of Eva’s book for a mysterious buyer. It’s the only copy ever and someone else wants it and is willing to kill for it. Three different time spans all come together in this great new book by Chanel Cleeton, who excels at these kind of novels. It is a story about family, love and the horrors of life in Cuba. You get invested early and it’s one of those books you do not want to put down.
