Cordelia, who is 14, has grown up with an over-protective mother, Evangeline. Who happens to be a sorceress, and at times uses her power to make her obedient. When she needs a man with money to take care of her, she moves Cordelia and herself to live with Samuel, a rich Squire, who she plans to marry and take over his house. When Evangeline goes too far with her powers, Cordelia confesses everything to Samuel’s sister, Hester, who doesn’t like the woman, and they form a plan to take her down. It won’t be easy to go up against someone powerful like her, and it becomes a battle of good vs. evil, with the help of a surprise, that just might tip the balance. Fans of magical mysteries will enjoy this one, and it makes for a good beach read.
