The year is 1815 and Lady Petra is with Duncan Shawcross, three years after the death of her fiancé. When she wakes up, Duncan is gone and a mysterious note is left, telling Petra that Duncan was the one who killed him. Feeling betrayed by him, she is summoned to the palace and given an assignment by Queen Charlotte, to investigate the murder of a matron at the Asylum for Female Orphans, which may be tied to a growing revolt for changes in England by a radical group, by overthrowing the royal family and killing one of them. Petra and Duncan end up talking, working things out, and each gets information about this deadly plan, as the country celebrates Napoleon being captured. Working together they are captured, their lives in danger and the shocking truth about what happened three years ago and the upcoming plan to take out the royal family are revealed, yet they may not live long enough to do anything with the information. This is the second novel in the series and it’s excellent. Lady Petra is a force, the story is well-written and with twists and turns, this one is a winner.
