Stafford Lee Penney is a very successful lawyer in Biloxi, Mississippi, and has never lost a case. He was even Biloxi’s #1 lawyer at one point. His case now is defending a white doctor who is accused of murdering his black mistress and killing their unborn son. The case is heated at times, and Stafford wins, keeping his record intact. He should be flying high when he finds out his estranged wife has been murdered in their home, and he skyrockets out of control, drinking too much, losing his law practice, and his close friends get him to go to rehab. He then becomes a part-time lifeguard, and gets back into law, with small cases. When his new intern is arrested for theft and murder, he will defend her, until he’s arrested as well for the same murder charge, and the evidence is overwhelming. Lucky for him, he has friends who believe he’s innocent, and when he decides to represent himself it’s an uphill battle, one he is determined to win. This is an excellent legal drama, hitting all the right notes, The courtroom scenes are top-notch, and Patterson & Allen have once again hit a home run.
