Alice Harper’s family is on their way home on Christmas Eve, and slide off the snowy road, the car overturns, and only Alice has survived, her parents and sister are gone, and there is no sign of their bodies, and are presumed dead. A year later Alice is living with her aunt and uncle, having visions of her father and a little girl, talking to her. At an abandoned house, she finds her little sister’s backpack and a dead body. Detective Jess Lambert, who was on leave after the death of her little girl, whom she sees all the time, is assigned on the case, with her partner Shane. As they investigate, and Alice looks into things, nothing is as it seems with her family. We learn via flashbacks certain facts and things that took place before that fatal night, and shocking reveals take place, right up to the very shocking end. This is a great follow-up to last year’s These Still Black Waters. Author McDonald has a way of leading you one way, and then bam, she throws in twists you never see coming.
