In the year 1870, 21-year-old Lisette Vigneau, from a rich family, is unmarried, and her parents agree to give her to a man who wants to marry her. It’s the time of the Prussian/French war, and Theo is fighting against them. Lisette meets Theo, falls for him, and decides to run away with him, and be his wife. They manage to buy the building they live in, which includes a bakery downstairs, which she opens, and starts selling bread. In 1946, 19-year-old Micheline Charier, is left raising her younger siblings, after her father has been killed, and her mother vanished. The war is over, but Paris is still recovering. She gets help from her neighbor, an old family friend, to open the bakery again, and sends her to a culinary school. We follow along with these two women, who are related by family, and follow along with their lives, through tough times, and good times. You find yourself rooting for these two, as we read their stories via alternating chapters. Fans of character driven novels will love this one.
