Review by Lisa Payne
Desperate times call for desperate measures.
I thought The Host would be about a gambling addict, Robert (Mike Beckingham) taking money from the bank he works for (such lax security measures), gambles it away, makes a deal with some Chinese gangsters to have his debts paid and has an adventure in Amsterdam losing and regaining the property he has to look after.
This movie went left very quickly. I nearly got whiplash. One minute Robert is enjoying some cheese and red wine with Vera (Maryam Hassouni) who owns the mansion in the centre of Amsterdam in which he is staying, and the next, he is seriously considering his life choices.
When Robert goes missing, his brother, Steve (Dougie Poynter) joins the search. There are subplots involving the DEA, a rescued child and adultery. They are simply devices to move the part Psycho, part Hostel (I enjoyed this), part Delicatessen story along.
It was a weirdly, partially fun movie.
