Avi Hirsch is a reporter in Chicago. He is married to Kay a lawyer and they have a daughter Emmiline. Something always seemed off about her but nothing that Avi could really figure out. That is until one night a door appears in his attic where he works and he learns of a secret world. A world full of people that have special gifts. A gift his daughter has. There is a school hidden in New York for people like her. Bishop is the leader and he thinks Emmiline should go to the school and he’s ready to tell the world about the school and these people.

Avi is given the story to write. When it becomes known there are people that have these special powers known as Resonants. These people are human like everyone else other than the powers they have. When word gets out it pits people who don’t care against people that thing they’re freaks and need to be taken care of. Most of these people are good but there is a rogue group that are using their powers for bad led by Owen, who has been given orders by someone that can talk to him. He has used his power for bad and killed a bunch of people.

Soon this sets up a showdown between the Resonants, the Government and everyday citizens. A war is coming and battle lines are drawn and who will live and who will die.

The story touches on a lot of topics like race, religion, terrorism, gay rights and fear. Author Bob Proehl has written a great start to a series featuring magic and different people being different. If you’re a fan of X-Men and Harry Potter this book is for you.

You can pick up The Nobody People in stores on Tuesday, September 3rd from Del Rey,
