TV Review: ‘Billy On The Street’ Premieres Thursday, October 8

Review by Ryan Unger

For those people who are familiar with Funny or Die’s “Billy on the Street” videos, the wild and energetic personality of host Billy Eichner will come as no surprise. For those who are unfamiliar with him, brace yourself. Billy’s show on truTV (also named Billy On The Street) is a full half hour of frantic mayhem as Billy runs around the streets of New York City asking strangers and celebrities alike random questions while engaging in comedic banter with all sorts of personalities.

The series premiere finds Billy spending much of his time with Tina Fey. They play a game called Latina Fey, in which Tina attempts to name 20 Latino celebrities in 60 seconds. Later in the episode, Tina returns as Billy tries to find her a new best friend on the street. In the second segment, Billy is on the move playing a game he calls “For A Dollar,” in which he runs up to strangers and shouts questions at them; if they answer correctly he gives them a dollar before rushing away to the next bewildered participant. The last segment has Billy playing a game called “Anal Sex or Bob Dylan” with two older women who, to their credit, played along great; it was 60 seconds of rapid fire statements which belonged in either the “Anal Sex” category or “Bob Dylan” category.

Billy’s energy is what’s fascinating to watch throughout the show –it’s over the top, aggressive and fun. The interviews with strangers on the street however can be hit or miss; some people have a lot of fun talking with Billy, while others seem much less interested in having questions yelled at them. Even when the interview clearly isn’t working, Billy is able to crack jokes to make it worth watching. Billy Eichner is clearly making a name for himself in the world of comedy, and as long as he can keep his chaotic energy level up and feature likeable celebrities like Tina Fey, people should tune in to see what Billy On The Street is all about.

New season premieres Thursday, Oct. 8, at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT.
