Peter Finch’s Golden Globe For ‘Network’ Up For Auction

Iconic original Golden Globe posthumously awarded to Peter Finch for his role as Howard Beale in the 1976 film ‘Network’ will be auctioned by Boston-based RR Auction.

In the film, Howard Beale has a mental breakdown while on-air. Ignoring the teleprompter, he breaks into one of the greatest soliloquies of American cinema, a wandering but coherent rant about the banks, crime and unemployment.

Finally, he urges his viewers to throw open their windows and yell, “I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take this any more!”

“Sadly, Finch passed away on January 14, 1977, before he was able to reap the fruits of his labor,” said Robert Livingston, Executive VP at RR Auction. “In addition to winning this Golden Globe, he was also awarded the first-ever posthumous Oscar.”

The award trophy bears a neatly engraved plaque on the front of the marble stand, “Peter Finch, Best Motion Picture Actor, Drama, ‘Network,’ 1976, Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Accompanied by an original program for the 34th Annual Golden Globe Awards, held on January 29, 1977. Written by Paddy Chayefsky and directed by Sidney Lumet, Network was Finch’s final feature film and one of the greatest commercial and critical successes of his prolific career.

“The film is arguably one of the finest dark comedies ever written — with profound and prophetic imagery eerily reminiscent to what many consider is occurring today,” said Livingston.

Network has continued to earn acclaim and accolades over the years, and since 2000 has been selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, inducted into the Producers Guild of America Hall of Fame, and named one of the greatest one hundred American films by the American Film Institute.

Also featured, a signed publicity photo of Faye Dunaway in her Oscar-winning role as Diana Christensen from the film.

The Fine Autographs And Artifacts from RR Auction began on January 20 and will conclude on February 8. More details can be found online at www.rrauction.com.
