The Transformers film franchise is a far cry from the Saturday morning cartoons of the 1980s. They are sophisticated, clever, they even have a story, and the characters are much more than the two dimensional images they used to be. But how does the latest instalment, Transformers 5 (or, to go by its real name, Transformers: The Last Knight), measure up to all the rest?
Well, the honest answer is that we just don’t know as yet. It won’t be released until 23rd June 2017, and changes are still being made even at this stage. However, we do know some things, some things that will be very interesting to those who love the Transformers movies and the universe and mythology surrounding them.
The cast of the Transformers movies does tend to change on a regular basis. It started with Megan Fox and Shia LaBeouf, and then turned into Mark Wahlberg, Jack Reynor, and Nicola Peltz. So who’s behind the wheel(s) of the fifth part of the story? The good news – probably – is that Mark Wahlberg is still with the franchise. His character, Cade Yeager, was originally meant to be a one off part, but he proved popular, and so Wahlberg was lured back into the Transformers’ world.
Now that Megan Fox has swapped her Transformers for Mutant Turtles, a new female lead was needed to The Last Knight, and she comes in the form of Isabela Moner. She’s 14 years old and has previously starred in various Nickelodeon shows. Her character is described as a tom boy orphan whose only friend is one of the Transformers. Formulaic and ‘done’ perhaps, but still… she could be interesting. And it’s nice to see some younger characters getting involved, as this means that the film could be a little softer than previous versions. After all, Transformers was originally for kids, and that does seem to have been lost somewhere along the way. Until, perhaps, now.
Behind The Scenes
Michael Bay proved himself with previous Transformers films and he is back to steer the ship – or drive the car – again with number five. The renowned director has been with the franchise since 2007, and the idea that he is still with it will probably allow fans to give a sigh of relief. But they might not want to relax quite so quickly; Bay has said that he wants to focus more on the human side of the story than the robots – and that big changes are ahead for The Last Knight. So yes, we’ve got him, but he might not be working in quite the same way as he used to…
The screenwriter is an essential part of the pre-production of any movie, and in the case of Transformers: The Last Knight we have Ehren Kruger. Since he has worked on all the other movies too, the storyline should be in safe hands, and the multilayers and crossover stories that the fans look for should still be in place. But, this is Hollywood, and anything can happen yet!
And Now We Wait
Now that the cast is almost confirmed and the story is well under way, fans just need to wait for more information and tidbits to be thrown out into the world from Hollywood. Soon enough they’ll come thick and fast, and it will be exciting to catch them all and attempt to make some kind of sense out of them. And if you can’t wait, why not re-watch the earlier movies to get an idea of why you might be getting? Or go online to Elitemobilecasino and try one of their Transformers themed slot games? It’s recommended for whiling away the time whilst waiting for another movie to finally come out! Finally, check out YouTube – those Saturday morning cartoons are still waiting for you…
