An enjoyable British comedy What We Did On Our Holiday is fun for the whole family. Doug (David Tennant of Doctor Who) and his estranged wife Abi (Oscar nominated Rosamund Pike from Gone Girl) reunite and take their three precocious kids Lottie (Emilia Jones), Mickey (Bobby Smalldridge), and Jess (Harriet Turnbull) to Scotland for a birthday party for Doug’s dad Gordie (Billy Connolly), who has terminal cancer. The party is put together by Doug’s millionaire brother Gavin (Ben Miller).
The couple haven’t told anyone of their plans to get divorced and go as a family hoping to get through the trip. It’s a long car trip with the family. The kids are a smart, wiser than their ages group. Along the way we learn why the couple have separated.
Once they arrive in Scotland for the party, we meet Gordie who’s living life to the fullest, despite his medical situation. Old issues arise between Gavin and Doug and really everyone all weekend is feeling tense. When Gordie takes the kids to the beach he tells them an old Viking way of being buried and that’s what he wants. When Gordie suddenly dies, the kids take matters into their own hands and chaos ensues.
This may seem like a serious movie, with lots of laughs and a great cast, it’s a delightful comedy for the whole family.
