Billie Kope (Natalie Burn), former Russian Special Forces, went searching for her missing sister in Mexico. One day she wakes up disheveled and disoriented on a remote island with absolutely no memory of being taken. There she teams up with a group of survivors against a mysterious group of black-ops soldiers that seem to be kidnapping people and bringing them to the island for unknown reasons. It soon becomes clear that Billie’s fate and the mystery behind her sister’s disappearance are intricately connected, and the answers lie in whatever is happening on the island.
‘Awaken’ is a decent action thriller. The action is both varied and entertaining, offering a variety of novel situations for violence to take place. At times it feels a bit like an 80’s action flick, which isn’t a bad thing in this case.
The movie does have a bit of a problem with its transitions between scenes, and some of the time between the action has a tendency to drag. The b-movie nature of the whole thing certainly makes the film better, but it also opens it up to some pretty sappy dialog and weird moments.
‘Awaken’ features a fairly star-studded cast, including Daryl Hannah, Vinnie Jones, Edward Furlong, and Jason London. I’m not sure that these big names add as much as would be expected in a film like this. Natalie Burn is the movie’s driving force. These bigger names are just a bit of icing on the cake. Honestly, even if these roles were played by little known actors the film would still be a fun watch.
