Box Set Review: ‘Spartacus: The Complete Series’ Is The Ultimate Box Set

There are very few shows as viscerally gory, violent, and sexual as the Starz series ‘Spartacus.’ From its very first episode it was made clear that the show would hold nothing back, and that in doing so it would be entertaining, as well as shocking. However, ‘Spartacus’ is not just about sensationalism. It features a tightly written plot that remained steady throughout its multi-season run.

The series chronicles the story of the famous Roman slave and eventual rebel leader ‘Spartacus,’ interspersing historical fact with creative license. In a style reminiscent of ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Spartacus’ employs a cutthroat and graphic take on storytelling. When all is said and done most of the characters will be brutally slain with a happy ending nowhere in sight. This is not so much a spoiler, as a testament to the view of Roman era brutality the show’s writers take to heart and vividly illustrate in each episode.

The quality of the show’s writing is demonstrated by the way it kept the series afloat through some major off-screen difficulties, including the tragic illness and eventual death of Andy Whitfield, the actor who portrayed the titular character in the first season. A prequel season and a recast lead did nothing to slow down the show, and its consistency is a tribute to all involved. The show had every reason to fall apart.

Though its viewer numbers were much lower than it deserved, ‘Spartacus’ remained a consistently entertaining and action packed watch its entire run. Hopefully in its new box set form the show can finally gain the viewership and respect it so deserved during its initial TV run.
