Just who is Annabelle? And what is the secret that Bay is keeping? And what lengths will the matriarch of the family go to keep the family name pure? These and more questions are asked and revealed in the novel The English Wife. It was released in 2018 and now available in paperback (well on February 26th).
Set in the 1890’s with a murder happening in 1899 to Bay, who is stabbed to death. And his Annabelle’s body is seen floating in the river below the house that they lived in by Janie (Bay’s sister). Through flashbacks to earlier in the decade we learn about Bay and Annabelle’s romance in London and their marriage and moving back to Newport and later Hudson (where they have twins), the home of the rich and famous. Where everyone knew everyone’s business and any hint of scandal was forbidden. And scandals there could be. It seems that the each member of the family seems to be hiding things.
When Janie teams up with a local reporter to find out the truth about might have killed Bay and Annabelle she learns a lot more than she ever bargained for. It all leads up to a stunning and shocking confession and the loss of another life in a climatic reveal of who is responsible and why.
The story is set in great locals that enhance the story of these characters. As each secret is revealed, you are left to wonder who you want to root for and who is telling the truth. Even though it came out in 2018 it may be one of my favorite books of 2019!
You can pick it up in stores in paperback on Tuesday, February 26th or any of the other formats today!
