One of the most fun books I have read this year. Shriver (Touchstone Trade Paper in stores September 29) written by Chris Belden, is a case of mistaken identity that goes to far in a fun way.
Shriver is a divorced, shut in of a man. He gets his groceries delivered once a week, is a big fan of Tina LeGros, of Channel 17 Action news and his friend is his car Mr. Bojangles. When he receives a letter in the mail inviting him to a writer’s conference to talk about his one huge novel, that was published over twenty years ago. Believing it may be a prank from an old college roommate, he decides to play along. He starts to write a story and tucks it in his coat. He receives airfare and when his ride shows for the airport, he quickly collects himself and takes off. On the plane next to him is a fellow author, who is enamored with him as the author (he begins to believe now it’s not a prank and they really think he is the author).
The author Shriver has not been seen or heard from in decades. When he arrives for the conference he’s ready to confess he’s not the real Shriver until he sees Simone (she is who is there to pick him up) and is attracted to he. He figures he may be able to pull this off. People left and right are excited to meet him and he’s pulling off being Shriver somehow (even though he feels guilty and wants to return home). The more he hangs around with Simone, the more he’s falling for her.
As the weekend goes on crazy things begin to happen. A fellow author goes missing (last seen with Shriver), a reporter who once interviewed the real Shriver wants another interview and calls and invites the agent for Shriver to the conference. The real Shriver shows up. And there are tons of mosquitoes in this town.
With a cast of quirky characters, funny situations and clever writing, you’ll enjoy Shriver from start to finish.
