John is married to Evelyn, and they have an 11-year-old daughter, Avery, who John has been devoted to his whole life. He’s given up everything to be the best dad he can to her, but at 11 she’s changing into a pre-teenager, which isn’t good for John. He signs them up for a camp for dads and daughters, during the last week of summer vacation, and Avery is not happy. Furthermore, he thinks this will get them back on track, but the camp is not what he thought it would be. It’s part camp and a place for everyone to try and get in touch with their feelings, and find out how they can be the best they can be. A lot of dads there have issues, and have to try and figure out how to be better dads. John is also keeping a secret from Avery, and it turns out to be quite a week for dads and daughters. At it’s core its about family and is a well-written, character-driven novel, that keeps you engaged and reading along. A great debut novel.
