I love the Chief Inspector Gamache novels and author Louise Penny has outdone herself with the 16th installment of her series. She has the whole family together in Paris and it’s a thrill-ride, suspenseful novel that answers a lot of questions in the series. If you’ve been a fan of the series you won’t be able to put this one down.

For Armand Gamache and his wife Reine-Marie it’s a family reunion in Paris along with Armand’s Godfather Stephen. They’re here to celebrate the impending birth of their next grandchild from Annie and Jean-Guy. Also to visit with their son Daniel and his family. Daniel is still harboring some sort of grudge against his father and no one seems to know why (we do learn in the book though why he’s feeling the way he is). On the way out after dinner a van approaches and then runs down Stephen leaving him for dead. He’s rushed to the hospital and is barely surviving.

Armand is determined to find out what happened to Stephen and calls his old friend who is the chief of Police in Paris. And this isn’t the end of it. At Stephen’s apartment he and Reine find a dead man and whoever did the killing is still in the apartment but gets away. But not before they spell the person’s cologne.

As Armand and Jean-Guy investigate it leads to some shocking reveals and somehow involves Daniel (who hasn’t been telling the truth about some things). Daniel is being set up for something and as they investigate it looks like the Police Chief might be involved as well. What’s going on goes to high levels. And as Armand gets closer and closer to the truth he’s not sure who he can trust and soon his family is in danger. He devises a plan to outwit the people responsible but time is running out to ensure the safety of his family.

Just as the plan is underway Annie goes into labor and the whole families lives are about to be turned inside out.

You can pick up All The Devils Are Here in stores from Minotaur on Tuesday, September 1st.
