‘Once’ is a 2007 critically acclaimed musical movie set in Dublin, Ireland. It was written and directed by John Carney for only $160,000 and won the 2007 Independent Spirit Award for best foreign film. The song “falling Slowly’ song by Glen Hansard, Markéta Irglová won the Oscar for original song in 2007 and the album was nominated for a Grammy.
Guy (Glen Hansard) is in his 30’s and sings and plays his guitar in a Dublin shopping district. Girl (Markéta Irglová) a young, unnamed Czech flower seller is drawn to his music and his songs. When she learns he also fixes vacuum cleaners, she hires him to fix hers.
Girl also sings and plays piano and he teaches her one of his songs. He explains that his songs are about a long time girlfriend that cheated on him. They decide to make music together and he finds out she’s married and she encourages him to try and get back with his ex. As they make music, feelings start to happen between them.
A great uplifting movie, with great performances from the leads and a soundtrack that is thoroughly enjoyable. I understand now why the movie made so many top ten lists for 2007.
