Blu-ray Review: ‘Shameless: The Complete Fifth Season’

The Gallagher family on Showtime’s Shameless are the most dysfunctional family on TV. In spite of that they love and have each others backs. In season five of the show (in stores Tuesday, December 29) it was not different. Things got taken up to a new level of insanity.

It’s summer in Chicago and each member of the family is going through their own turmoil. Fiona (Emmy Rossum) has a new job and attraction to her boss (Dermot Mulroney) and gets involved with a musician (Steve Kazee) who she impulsively marries. To complicate things her ex Steve (Justin Chatwin) returns. Meanwhile Frank is his usual mess and falls in love with a terminally ill cancer patient and they have crazy sex and adventures. Lip (maybe the only sane one) is at college struggling to pay his bills while maintaining great grades. He also starts an affair with one of his professors (whose husband is involved as well). Debbie is now in her teens and gets a boyfriend and has sex (and in a crazy way the first time). Ian’s bi-polar is making him do things he shouldn’t and the family has to rally around to save him from himself. Carl is getting in to trouble big time and ends up in jail.

All in all another crazy season with the best family on TV. The show is always overlooked when award time comes (especially Emmy Rossum). I’ve seen the first four episodes of season six and you will not be disappointed. You can catch up on season five when Shameless: The Complete Fifth Season hits stores on Tuesday, December 29.
