Mention Kevin Hart’s name and you immediately think of him as the stand-up comedian in his successful stand-up documentaries Let Me Explain or Laugh At My Pain. However, after successful roles in Grudge Match and Think Like A Man, and now Ride Along, Kevin is proving himself to be the next big break out urban comedic actor.
Kevin Hart co-stars along side rapper turned successful actor Ice Cube in this action comedy which is packed with tons of laughable moments. Ben Barber (Hart) is determined to make it into the police academy and continue to grow his life with his girlfriend Angela (Tika Sumpter). But Angela’s overly protective older brother, Atlanta PD detective James Payton, doesn’t feel he’s the right man for his sister. In exchange for his blessing to marry his sister, James decides to take Ben on a “Ride Along” around Atlanta for him to prove he’s able to handle being a cop, but most importantly worthy enough to marry Angela.
While the two are out patrolling the streets, they encounter one crazy scenario after the next. Although unrealistic, each of the scenarios call for hilarious results. While Ben is ecstatic to finally get the opportunity to live the life of a cop, James is willing to do everything in his power to make sure Ben fails the task. Eventually, James may find himself having to depend on Ben to help crack a case he’s been working on solving for years.
Kevin and Ice Cube’s back and forth bickering is outrageously funny and will certainly remind you of the relationship between Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker in the Rush Hour franchise. Ride Along easily is one of those films that can certainly be the start of a new franchise when it comes to action comedies. Although there are unrealistic moments when it comes to the plot (ie. allowing a civilian to engage in active police calls) and not tons of action, Ride Along is intended to be ridiculously funny and that’s exactly what you will get.
