Blu-ray Review: ‘Minions’

I remember thinking, when the first ‘Despicable Me’ came out, that I would like to see more of the little minion characters. Then the second one came out and we got a lot more, but it didn’t work. I thought that the problem was they made the minions turn into annoying purple monsters and if they were just the cute minions from the first that it would be better. Well, that’s exactly what they have done with the aptly titled ‘Minions’.

This journey leads them all the way from New York to London and a little in between. However, the movie is mostly about the antics of the characters while they are on the way from one location to the next. The three minions are certainly cute, but they mostly play like a yellow version of the three stooges and most of the slapstick is pretty flat. Younger kids will eat it up, but you may find yourself rolling your eyes from time to time.

There is some good voice acting here from Sandra Bullock and Jon Hamm as the Overkill’s. They are the best villains in the world and they want the crown from the Queen of England. So, they use the minions to do their dirty work and that leads to some stuff I won’t disclose for spoilers sake. Some of it is funny and clever, but most is predictable. I think that even children will see where it’s going.

Available in stores on Tuesday, December 8.
