Blu-ray Review: ‘Kung Fu Panda & Kung Fu Panda 2’

Review by Nathan Ligon

With the theatrical release of ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’, it was sort of inevitable that we would get a special edition or something for the previous movies. The good news is that if you have not yet seen these films then it’s not to late to start. It’s a wonderful trilogy of movies and well worth the time for those with kiddos.

If you are unfamiliar, the original ‘Kung Fu Panda’ is the journey of a young panda who must figure out how to become the Dragon Warrior. The best way to describe it is the idea of a young kid who worships a bunch of heroes and then becomes the leader of those heroes, but has no idea how to be a hero. It’s about discovery and discovering the best in oneself. It’s also hilarious.

The second is equally funny, but a step forward in all regards. The story telling is more fluidly told than the original. The tale is more deep in every way you can imagine. The writing is more honest and exploratory. The villain is more menacing and has a brilliantly constructed connection to the panda, Po (Jack Black). You also get a lot more of the crew around Po and the bond they build as a team. Tigress (Angelina Jolie) (the former leader of the crew) has a particularly well drawn out character arc this time around.

The basic plot of ‘Kung Fu Panda 2′ is the journey into Po’s past and the confrontations, both physical and emotional, that have shaped his existence. Po discovers a lot here, but the most important is who he believes he is. Honestly, it’s just one of the best kids movies made this century.
