‘Empire Records’ is what teen comedies today should aspire to be. It is unfortunate that such a large part of its main plot, the record store, is becoming more and more unrelatable to future generations as time goes on. If you’ve seen ‘Empire Records’ before then there’s a decent chance that you’ve watched it more times than you care to admit. It is that kind of movie.
The film follows the employees of an independent record store as they try to stop their store from being bought out by a large chain store. More than this though the film offers an interesting look at Gen-X teenagers. Of course no movie can do an entire generation justice, but this is probably the most watchable attempt as far as the Gen-Xers are concerned. Not only are thhe characters are all relatable and likeable, but a bunch of familiar faces pop up including Liv Tyler, Renee Zellweger, and Ethan Embry.
‘Empire Records’ is just one of those movies that everyone needs to see at least once. It didn’t win any big awards, but it is a solid well-written movie with laughs and character. Movies like this are few and far between.
