Oliver Stone is one of the great filmmakers of all time. With Alexander he set out to tell the story of Alexander The Great. He tells the story of his life with an all-star cast.

Alexander (Colin Farrell) is the son of Philip of Macedonia (Val Kilmer) and Queen Olympias (Angelina Jolie). As a young boy he sees his drunken father do bad things, including almost raping his mother. The Queen also insists that Zeus is his father. Soon mother and son are banished and Philip is murdered, giving Alexander the throne. Soon he decides to take over the world and sets out to do that.

In Stone’s version he’s shown as a down to earth guy taking with his army, their wives and anyone else he comes across. The subject of his sexuality is seen as well for he has love for Hempaiston (Jared Leto) and is married to Roxane (Rosario Dawson). He also has Ptolemy (Anthony Hopkins) doing narration throughout the movie to explain things and gaps.

Stone made an ambitious project with Alexander. The movie succeeds on most points but is not completely flushed out when it comes to Alexander’s love life. The set contains two versions of the movie, the original and the new version with 31 more minutes of footage and a brand new documentary.
