Best of 2015: The Video Games That Defined The Year

I must make it clear from the start that I have still not played ‘Rise of the Tomb Raider’ because of Christmas and the whole having to wait for presents thing. If I had then I’m pretty sure it would be on here (probably at the top of my list), but other than that I have played most everything else of consequence. So, without further ado, here are the best games of 2015.

Best Video Games of 2015

5. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3
This games main story might not be as compelling as the previous chapter, but it makes up for it with an interesting zombie mode and multiplayer that actually lets you play without going online. I spent many hours having fun with the simple extras of this game and while likely spend many more hours playing zombie mode and finishing out the story in the near future. Most games aren’t worth the big bucks, but you get money’s worth with this one.

4. Super Mario Maker
The idea behind this game is revolutionary. It is a never ending Mario game that invites infinite possibilities for level design and play. If you want to create the Mario world of your dreams then you can do it. If you want to play levels until your hearts desire then you can do that. This is a game to end all games for side scrolling fans or just Mario fans in general. I’ve never been great at Mario, but I’ve seen my wife spend more hours on this game than any other before it. Which is why this might be Nintendo’s finest hour and certainly its best game of 2015.

3. Batman: Arkham Knight
It’s amazing that this series still had something fresh left to give, but it certainly did with this game. The story here is extremely compelling and the way it utilizes the Joker is possibly the most memorable since what Christopher Nolan did with ‘The Dark Knight’. The game mechanics were already smooth enough to begin with, but some new swinging and soaring makes for some exhilarating moments. While some might have settled for a great story and improved mechanics, this game was only content with the addition of an entirely new dynamic. The addition of the batmobile changes the entire experience and makes for some of the most exciting fights I experienced this year. I hope this isn’t the final outing, but if it is then what a way to go out.

2. Fallout 4

Easily the most expansive experience of the year and certainly the one people will be spending the most time on. ‘Fallout 4’ is the first next generation experience in this world and it is absolutely beautiful looking. It’s also filled to the brim with a million different things to do and tons of ways to do it. Many of the systems that were introduced in previous incarnations of ‘Fallout’ are still here along with many new additions. The story is also very well told and the voice acting is top notch. I can’t wait to buy this game and waste countless hours in the exciting world.

1. Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain

The original ‘Metal Gear Solid’ is still one of the best games of all time and the subsequent sequels were almost as good. Hell, the demo for the second ‘Metal Gear Solid’ was so good that I spent over 50 hours just playing a section of the game that could be beat in about 5 minutes. The only complaint that anybody has ever had is how consistently cinematic they are and how much time you spend watching the story play out. That’s certainly not a complaint I had, but clearly director Hideo Kojima heard this complaint and put the emphasis in this game completely on the gameplay.

Well, while I miss some of the bigger cinematics, the gameplay in this game is so epic that I can forgive any narrative short comings. I have spent over 30 hours and done nearly 50 missions, but I am nowhere near complete. The endless ways that you can approach missions is mind boggling and coming at missions becomes more and more fun every single time. Honestly, if you are a fan of espionage you will love this game. If you are a fan of sneaking into missions and slowly taking enemies out then you will love this game. If you just want to destroy everything in a blind rage then you will love this game. Bottom line, this is the best game of the year and I think you will love it!
