The Best Movie Trailers Of 2017

Article by Victor Gordon

Can we agree a great movie trailer is a work of art? To be able to distill a two-hour movie to its absolute essence in two minutes or less and cause people to be salivating to see it is a true craft. Here are some trailers for 2017 movies that have us excited.

Blade Runner: 2049

This trailer for the sequel to the sci-fi classic opens with Harrison Ford’s familiarly paternal voice explaining Replicants. It then establishes Denis Villeneuve as director and Ryan Gosling as the new star before building to a white-knuckle finish. Even though spinoffs and reboots can get old in Hollywood, this film doesn’t have that feel to it. It has been 35 years since the original came out and even though Ridley Scott isn’t directing, Denis Villeneuve has proven he can direct a great movie.

Alien: Covenant

From the start, it’s chaos on a spaceship, with screaming and running galore. Then you see the words “From Ridley Scott” and know exactly why you should be worried. Fans of the franchise have always seeked a prequel to the thrilling sci-fi series and got it with 2012’s Prometheus and will now dive even deeper into this story.

Dunkirk

Groups of soldiers gather like the calm before the storm until the gunfire comes down in the trailer for Christopher Nolan’s latest. It’s a well-edited trailer that says a lot without saying too much. Once every few years a war film becomes one of the must-watch films of the year. At this point, you have to trust everything Nolan puts out. This move looks like it has the potential to capture the essence of war just as Saving Private Ryan did.

Wonder Woman

The trailer for the Justice League heroine’s first solo venture has us excited for its historical setting and what looks to be great chemistry between stars Gal Gadot and Chris Pine. Fans of Wonder Woman have been waiting for years for the heroine to get her own stand-alone film. This movie looks like an action-packed background story as we prepare to see her in many DC Universe movies moving forward. Wonder Woman played a crucial role in Batman vs. Superman, so it will be great to see more of her character on the screen.

Logan

The solemn guitar strings of Johnny Cash’s “Hurt” scores this trailer for Hugh Jackman’s final stint as Wolverine. The conclusion of this 17-year run as Wolverine has a Western feel to it, as it will be bittersweet to watch Jackman in his last role as truly one of the first super heroes we saw on screen not named Batman or Superman. It looks gritty, emotional, intense and a must-see all-around.

Baywatch

In the spirit of the “Jump Street” films, this comedy is a tongue-in-cheek reboot of a dated TV series. No one on planet earth is more popular than The Rock right now and it is only fitting that he stars in a movie showing off his body. This movie should be a feel-good movie with corny cliches but that will be pulled off nicely by the cast. With Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron’s proven comic timing and lots of funny moments in the trailer, we’re excited.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

There have been as many actors portraying Spider-Man since 2002 as there have been United States presidents, so it’s understandable to feel overloaded. Still, Tom Holland’s first solo stint looks very promising. This is Marvel’s first stand alone Spider-Man movie in its phase three of their cinematic universe. Spider-Man is one of the most beloved superheroes of all-time and with not the most popular characters getting movies and TV shows, it’s nice to see Spidey on the big screen again. Marvel has been on fire with their movies lately so this movie will have high expectation.

The Fate of the Furious

The latest installment in the most indestructible of action franchises ups the intrigue with Dom (Vin Diesel) betraying his crew. Will they ever end this series? Probably not. Do we want them to? Absolutely not. It is always fun to see what ridiculous predicament this crew can get into and what visuals they can pull off. This series has come a long way from street racing in Los Angeles back in 2001. From big guns, explosions, and planes, there will still be plenty of explosions and car crashes along the way. This series has developed into one of the most exciting action series in recent times.

War for the Planet of the Apes

Who would’ve thought one of the best action franchises would star a bunch of CGI apes? In this trailer for the third installment, Anthony Serkis’ narrates intensely as ape leader Caesar in the war to end all wars. We get to see Woody Harrelson take on the apes in what seems like to be the humans’ last stand against the primates. This blockbuster series has a dark feel to it and should have an exciting conclusion to the series, if this is indeed the end.

Kong: Skull Island

“Is that a monkey?” an ill-fated helicopter pilot asks before his vessel is pummeled to smithereens and we see the glowering face of the most fearsome of apes, King Kong. This film has been rebooted several times but this movie has a different feel to it. With rumors of a Godzilla and King Kong possible fight in 2020, this movie will be looking to create a whole new fan base for the beast. It doesn’t look like Kong will be climbing the Empire State Building in this movie, as we can expect an action-packed movie and not a corny romance movie like in previous adaptations. Even with a great cast featuring Samuel L. Jackson, John C. Reilly, Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and John Goodman, we know who is truly king here.
